We don't have to be Chinese by blood to look forward to Chinese New Year. Aside from the extra holiday everyone gets to enjoy, there are a many things to love about Chinese New Year and here are some, to name a few.


1. Tikoy

Fun fact: It is called nián gāo in Mandarin, which directly translates to two meanings "sticky cake" and "a higher year." These coincidentally complementary meanings made this delicacy a symbol of hope and good luck on Chinese New Year.

In the Philippines, it is known for its Fookien counterpart, Tikoy and it is literally everywhere during the Chinese New Year season. Whether or not we knew the symbolism behind it, we love its sweet flavor and sticky texture anyway.

 

2. Chinese Horoscope

Predictions on business, health, career, and even love will be up on walls in shopping malls and even in websites and social media. You'll easily spot them in a list categorized by your zodiac sign. Some would take them seriously and some with a grain of salt, but it never hurt to check and read on our zodiac's fate for the year ahead.

 

3. Dragon and Lion Dance

The sound of drums beating, the colorful mascots that come with blinking eyelids, and the synchronized movements of the dancers underneath, altogether spark the glorious, joyful feeling of celebration and merrymaking. The dragon and lion dance is said to bring luck and prosperity to people, that's why you see them in big celebrations like the Chinese New Year.
