We don’t have to be Chinese by blood to look forward to Chinese New Year. Aside from the extra holiday everyone gets to enjoy, there are a many things to love about Chinese New Year and here are some, to name a few.

1. Tikoy

Fun fact: It is called nián gāo in Mandarin, which directly translates to two meanings “sticky cake” and “a higher year.” These coincidentally complementary meanings made this delicacy a symbol of hope and good luck on Chinese New Year.

In the Philippines, it is known for its Fookien counterpart, Tikoy and it is literally everywhere during the Chinese New Year season. Whether or not we knew the symbolism behind it, we love its sweet flavor and sticky texture anyway.

2. Chinese Horoscope

Predictions on business, health, career, and even love will be up on walls in shopping malls and even in websites and social media. You’ll easily spot them in a list categorized by your zodiac sign. Some would take them seriously and some with a grain of salt, but it never hurt to check and read on our zodiac’s fate for the year ahead.

3. Dragon and Lion Dance

The sound of drums beating, the colorful mascots that come with blinking eyelids, and the synchronized movements of the dancers underneath, altogether spark the glorious, joyful feeling of celebration and merrymaking. The dragon and lion dance is said to bring luck and prosperity to people, that’s why you see them in big celebrations like the Chinese New Year.

4. Chinese New Year Sale

Like any other occasion, you’d be sure a sale is coming up for Chinese New Year. Go check on that sweater you’ve always wanted to buy, that gadget you put on your online shopping wishlist, or that staycation you promised to take your kids to. Chances are, they’re all on sale!

Have you had tikoy, read your horoscope, seen a dragon and lion dance, and grabbed the best CNY deals yet?

  • COZY AND HOMEY. This was our 6th or 7th stay and the staff is still very accommodating. The location is strategic being right beside convenience stores, mall, and restaurants… I can say we plan to make it a habit to greet the new year here.”

  • OUTSTANDING AND FRIENDLY SERVICE. The service at the facility is outstanding from arrival to departure. Any thing you ask for is done promptly and with a smile. The gym is pretty good with all the requirements of a hotel gym, with sauna, personal trainers and group classes.”

  • FABULOUS LOCATION AND SUPERB STAFF. The suites themselves are excellent with modern self catering facilities, fabulous bathrooms, comfy beds and exceptionally clean. The location is great for the CBD and restaurants and malls are all close by.”

  • COMFORTABLE HOME AWAY FROM HOME. I stayed in the Discovery suites hotel for 7 weeks in March and April while in Manila for work. And it was very easy for me to start calling it home after a few days! The location is great – podium mall across the street, Starbucks next door and across the street, megamall and Robinson’s galleria only a couple of blocks away.”
