The Broadway musical, “Waitress” is coming to Manila, courtesy of the Atlantis Theatrical Entertainment Group, and we can’t be more thrilled! If you’re wondering why, we’ll break it down for you.
1. It hits home.
Originally a film, “Waitress” tells the story of Jenna, a pie maker and waitress at a diner, who is stuck in an abusive marriage, meets someone new, and yearns for a fresh start. Let’s not get into the details, but “Waitress” certainly hits home portraying love and life—two things anyone can relate to.
2. Music and lyrics are by Sara Bareilles.
Ever sang to “Love Song” or “Brave?” We’re in for a whole lot of 6-time Grammy nominee, Sara Bareilles, who wrote and scored the music and lyrics of “Waitress.”
3. Joanna Ampil is Jenna.
Acclaimed musical theatre and film actress, Joanna Ampil is playing Jenna! She has performed in a good number of West End musicals including Miss Saigon and Les Misérables, not to mention she won Best Actress at the 43rd Metro Manila Film Festival for her role as Candida in the 2017 film “Ang Larawan.” A powerhouse is formed as she is joined by Bituin Escalante and Maronne Cruz who will be playing Becky and Dawn respectively.
